Lake Logan International Triathlon 2009

By: Jack Shannon

Lorraine, Cooper and I just spent a great weekend at the Lake Logan tri along with Michelle and her husband Jeff; and Tim, his wife Coleen and their two children Erin and Katherine.  Everyone raced in the tri except for the kids and Lorraine.

Kudos to Tim for pushing the idea (at least to me) of doing this race.  Kudos to Michelle for finding us a great cabin in a great setting.  Last but not least, kudos to mountain weather.  While the running group was slogging through another hot, humid run; we were in the mountains in a wetsuit legal (in August!) swim.  The temps were in the 70’s for the bike and run.  Oh, and the run was in the shade.

“Sure”, you are thinking, “But you were in the mountains.  Tell us about the hills.”  Yes, there was a memorable climb early and late in the bike (same hill), but the rest was flat to rolling.  The run was an out and back.  The first 5k was a net gain in elevation, so the back 5k was a decline.  The setting for the whole event was gorgeous.  This is a must do again event.

Highlights of the event:

  • Michelle brought home hardware finishing 3rd in her age group.
  • Jeff finished 18/48 in his age group.  His bike time was fifth in his age group.
  • Tim finished 5th in his age group.  His run time was first in his age group.
  • Coleen finished 9th in her age group.  This was her first International distance!
  • I finished 17/36 in my age group.  My average bike speed was over 20 MPH, a first for me for that distance.
